La Castellana Shopping Center was born as a consequence of the high demand of the Northern part of Madrid. This place joins a residential area, a commercial area and an offices area. So, that is the origin of the block that includes Raimundo Fernández Villaverde Street, Orense, General Perón and Castellana area ( the Commercial Zone named AZCA)
The Planning and Coordination Commission of the Madrid Metropolitan Area approved in 1966 the Partial Plan by means of an International Contest. The rebreaking up of the area was approved in 1975.
Unión de Explosivos Río Tinto, S.A., owner of the A-1 plot of the area, awarded the construction of the highest office building to Minoru Yamakasi ( 1912-1986) with the colaboration of architects, Jorge Mir Valls and Rafael Coll Pujol. That was done by an international competition. Yamakasi is an North American architect with Japanese origins; he got the license for the construction in 1980.
